Swell is stoked to say that we were among the first retailers to feature Hurley online. Focusing on very of-the-moment apparel and high performance surf clothing and gear, Hurley quickly became one of our best selling brands. Hurley traces its roots back to the Southern California surf industry in the late 1970's, when Hurley Surfboards launched in Costa Mesa circa 1979. They were an instant success as shaper Bob Hurley was making boards for many of the best surfers in the world. In 1982, Bob and his business manager, Joe K., began pursuing the hot Australian clothing brand, Billabong. Bob was attracted to the company because of their super long, punk rock boardshort styles. With the help of friends and family, Billabong USA was established as a separate entity and licensee for Billabong. Around 1995 Bob realized that the modern surfer also loved fashion, skate, snow, music and art. The team began to re-think what it meant to be a "surf" brand. In early 1998, the internal Billabong USA team was formulating a new idea for the future and later that year, Bob and his team decided to launch Hurley. And the rest they say is history.
