And it all began in 1973 when Gordon and Rena Merchant began making handmade boardshorts in their small Australian flat overlooking their beloved Burleigh Head break. The boardshorts were tough as nails, able to withstand the elements, and absorb the punishment locals like Rabbit Bartholomew could dish out.

For the next few years, Gordon buried himself in his North Burleigh factory until his once little label began to burst at the seams. In the 80s, Billabong went international and began to employ some of the finest minds in the surf industry who would take the company to the helm of the surfing world. To date, Billabong hosts surfing’s biggest contests and events, include the Billabong Pipeline Masters, the World Juniors, the XXL Big Wave Awards and countless others. They have also expanded their team roster to include the best men and women athletes from skating, snowboarding and wakeboarding.
