SUMMARY OF DUTIES:


  • Work with all aspects of the open-to-buy process and all aspects of the business that effects the gross margin.
  • Develop seasonal merchandise strategies, division key concepts, key items and contribute to promotional strategies.
  • Build a well-balanced assortment that leverages advantages of the web.
  • Constantly search for and test brands that fit with Swell's surf and fashion image.
  • Build strong relationships with vendors to maximize Swell's merchandise and marketing relationship.
  • Position division investments to ensure that smart risks are being taken, basic businesses are protected and financial targets are met.
  • Partner with planning on seasonal plans and monitoring weekly and monthly OTB.
  • Identify business opportunities and risks in-season through analyzing sales performance and gathering marketplace information.
  • Change future division strategies in-season where needed and react quickly to customer and business trends.
  • Provide feedback and direction for brand related activities such as photoshoots.
  • Develop and train associate/assistant buyers.
  • Deliver an analysis of division business on business weekly basis to team.


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Must have 3-5 years of retail buying in the apparel industry with a proven track record.
  • Must possess strong analytical skills including understanding all aspects of retail math, the open-to-buy process and all aspects of the business that effects the gross margin.
  • Must understand the process of building a strong well-balanced assortment.
  • Must have experience building an assortment with and buying from many brands.
  • Must be able to travel locally approximately 25 - 50% of time.
  • Must have great organizational skills and outstanding follow through.
  • Must be a strong negotiator and have the ability to negotiate for the best price possible.
  • Must be a self-motivator, self-starter and independent thinker.
  • Must have a passion for fashion and being first to market.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Requires working knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Must possess strong presentation, listening, written and verbal skills.


Marketing & Merchandising Interns


Overview:


The Marketing Intern assists both the merchandising and marketing teams with various projects that drive the business day-to-day. The perfect candidate will have a willingness to learn, strong work ethic and an interest in both surf lifestyle and retail.


Key Job Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:


  • Contributes content to blog and site in general. Executes blog outreach programs and manages promotions on social networks.
  • Comes up with and executes site sweepstakes .
  • Performs quality assurance on each of the products as they arrive, but prior to going up for sale on the website.
  • Generates marketing and other reports as needed.
  • Attends events on behalf of Swell to raise awareness and document events.
  • Participates in merchandising the website and creating looks for our seasonal guides (such as the swimwear lookbook).
  • Suggest ideas for improving the website.
  • Ensures some web updates are completed error-free and on time.
  • Follows standardized departmental processes, including directory and naming conventions, QA and publishing procedures.


Required (Basic) Qualifications:


  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be attending college and a part of an intern program.
  • Extremely detail oriented with excellent communication skills.
  • An interest in clothing, retail and the surf lifestyle.
