The S’well team works daily to create products and a culture that makes the world a better place. But so do many of our team members, who go above and beyond, spending their time outside the office giving back and doing good. We’re proud to share these stories here in our People With Purpose column, and hope they inspire you as much as they do us. Next up, our Director of Global Communications, Erin Kelly and our Social Media Manager, Margaret Frazier, who just completed the New York City Marathon on behalf of Team UNICEF.
Tell us about a recent experience that felt purposeful to you.
Erin Kelly: This November, Margaret and I ran in our first-ever Marathon in NYC as a part of Team UNICEF! UNICEF is an organization that we work very closely with at S’well, so it was a natural fit that we’d join them for race day.
Margaret Frazier: On top of training for the big race, we also pledged to raise $4,000 each to protect children worldwide. Fundraising wasn’t easy, but it made the experience even richer. Collectively, our team has raised over $326,500!
What inspired you about this experience?
EK: Beyond embarking on one of the most challenging physical and mental journeys I have ever been through, I was so inspired by the work that UNICEF is doing all over the world. Every day, they fight for the rights of children — to save their lives, provide education, and help them fulfill their potential. Children are our future leaders and each one deserves the right to safety and education.
MF: The UNICEF team and all of the amazing work they do was definitely one of my biggest motivators throughout training. It was an easy way to keep things in perspective! On top of that, the outpouring of support from my friends, family, and coworkers was so fulfilling.
What does purpose mean to you? Or what tips do you have for living a purposeful life?
EK: For me, purpose has always been about people — how I can positively impact their lives, how they impact mine, how I grow and help them grow, and what we can learn from each other. I think this is why I was naturally drawn to a career in Communications, and why my recent Marathon experience with Team UNICEF meant so much to me. My tips for living a purposeful life are simple: be kind, keep an open mind, and embrace the unknown.
MF: I think purpose is finding the good in everything, all in the hopes that we can each contribute to a greater collective good. Whether it’s running a race for charity, working for a mission-driven company, or even just flashing someone a smile, it’s all about trying to leave a place better than I found it.
What would you like to do or do you plan to do next that is full of purpose?
EK: I’m currently working on figuring that out! Hopefully something with travel and adventure.
MF: Another marathon is definitely in the cards for me. You can participate in races all over the world — I’ve got my eye on London next!
